On Aug. 15, Messi scored the opening goal in a 72-second friendly against Australia in Beijing, China. It was the fastest goal of his career. He later added a second goal to give Argentina a comfortable 2-0 victory.
After the game, Messi was asked if he would play in the 2026 World Cup. Messi shook his head.
“I’m enjoying this moment with the Argentina national team and taking it day by day,” he said. Now the team is looking ahead to the Copa America. The World Cup just ended. This is not the time to think about the next World Cup. It would be cruel to talk about the next World Cup now.”
Messi continued, “Now a new cycle begins. This journey will continue. We have to enjoy every game. I will try to enjoy it. And I want to take it slow and think about what’s going to happen next.”
Messi, meanwhile, takes his tally against Australia to 175 caps. With one more goal, he has 103. He remains Argentina’s all-time leader in caps and goals.
